Self-Clinching Wide Head High Torque Studs - Series HCW

When high torque studs are required in very thin sheets Captive Fastener recommends the HCW and HCWS series of fasteners.

The Captive Fastener brand of our high torque Wide Head Studs provide a solution for sheets as thin as .031” / 0.8mm thick. The extra wide head eliminates distortion of the panel despite the very thin thickness due to the fact that the load is spread over a greater surface area. This extra wide head coupled with a thicker design allows mating parts to be attached with larger holes with no problems. The HCW and HCWS series of wide head studs offer excellent torque out and pull through resistance. These fasteners offer a low cost of installation and are easily installed using a press that provides the squeezing force required to properly seat the fastener into the panel. Once the studs are installed they become an integral part of the assembly. When properly installed the head of the fastener sits slightly above the panel. When the mating nuts are attached no tool is required to keep the stud from rotating as the stud is captivated in the panel. If later servicing or assembly is required there is no need to access both sides of the panel since the fastener is permanently attached to the assembly. The HCW series are made with heat treated medium carbon steel and are generally supplied in a zinc clear finish, but other coatings are available upon request. The HCWS series are offered in 300 series stainless steel and are supplied passivated to ASTM A967.

Requirements for the Successful Installation of Wide Head Studs:

When installing HCW (steel) or HCWS (stainless) studs in steel or aluminum panels the fasteners must be harder than the panels into which they will be installed. For example the HCW series studs can be installed into panels with a maximum hardness of HRB 85. When installing the HCWS series of studs the panels must be a maximum hardness of HRB 70. The proper hole sizes and minimum sheet thickness depending on the thread size is spelled out in our catalog in the Dimensions & Specifications section.  When properly installed the Wide Head studs provide excellent push out and torque values. The installation force for the fasteners and the performance values can be seen in our catalog in the Installation & Performance section. For example if a HCW420-12 (1/4-20 STUD ¾” long) is installed into a steel panel with a .040” thickness the recommended hole size is .250” +.005” -.000 and the installation force is 13,500 lbs.

These fasteners are ROHS and REACH compliant and the HCW series can be provided in zinc, plain finish, or other coatings upon request. The HCWS series is supplied passivated to ASTM A967.
