Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical (REACH)

REACH stands for the Regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. The REACH Regulation entered into force on 1st June 2007 to streamline and improve the former legislative framework for chemicals of the European Union (EU). REACH also creates the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) which has a central co-ordination and implementation role in the overall process. ECHA is located in Helsinki, Finland and will manage the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction processes for chemical substances to ensure consistency across the European Union.

REACH is a regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, while enhancing the competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry. It also promotes alternative methods for the hazard assessment of substances in order to reduce the number of tests on animals.

REACH is currently at 235 Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). Articles are exempt from REACH unless they contain any SVHCs exceeding 0.1% by weight.
